Advice from one of the Ride Captains on 'tapering' your training

This subject came up at the end of the training ride on Sunday. The ride captain was quite clear that you could not improve your fitness in any way between now and the start of the event and all that was required was some gentle maintenance - shorter easy rides and spinning. Some interval training may be of some benefit but nothing hard core - just alternating easy spins with slightly faster spins. If you are considering cross-training swimming is the preference over running, which is now best avoided.

His recommendations were also to get plenty of sleep, lots of recovery and make good nutritional choices - lots of pasta and quality carbs, no red meat after Monday, some vitamins and limit the alcohol content (keeping well hydrated).

During this phase it is sensible to spend some time servicing the bike and preparing lists for items you are going to take for the event. This process reduces the stress and last minute panic.

I hope that helps - enjoy the taper!
